Malta's film industry is going through exciting times with a number of major films and productions taking place, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said this morning.

Speaking during the launch of the Malta Film Fund, which has an allocation of €233,000 for the development and production of short films, features and documentaries, and which has been set up for the third year running, the minister said that The Game of Thrones was filmed here this year.

Next year, there will be Asterix and Obelix with Gerard Depardieux, Simbad, which will be filmed between January and December an, World War Z, which will generate €30 million.

However, Malta had to cater not just for the foreign film sector but also for indigenous productions.

Culture Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco said that the creative sector contributed to four per cent of the gross domestic product, employing more than 7,000 people in some 4,000 enterprises.

Through the film one, one can get between €3,000 - €20,000 for film development and between €5,000 to €100,000 for production. The deadline for the applications is October 25.
