A court ordered two men to pay €15,871 to Transport Malta for damage caused to an overhead footbridge in Marsa in an incident which caused traffic mayhem in April 2010.

An excavator being carried on a low loader trailer hit the bridge at Aldo Moro Road.

The driver was Carmel Spiteri, and the low loader was registered in the name of another man bearing the same name. The two were accused of negligence.

The trailer’s owner em-ployed his nephew Sammy Hili to mount the excavator on the trailer, but Mr Hili had never received any training and failed to fully lower the excavator’s arm.

The driver too was inexperienced and failed to do anything about it.

The resulting accident caused nearly €19,000 in repairs, consultancy and traffic management fees.

Mr Justice Mark Chetcuti found the two men guilty and ordered them to pay the damages suffered by Transport Malta.
