A former prison warder has given the Commissioner of Police a week to pay over €186,000 compensation awarded to him in October 2008 together with almost €20,000 in interest.

Anthony Mifsud had been awarded €186,349.87 after he was wrongly accused of helping two prisoners escape in 1983. During investigations, Mr Mifsud was forced at gunpoint to sign an admission of guilt, after which he spent three years under preven-tative arrest in prison before his trial by jury, where he was acquitted.

The interest, amounting to €19,319.11, was calculated at a rate of eight per cent as from October 30, 2008, when the First Hall of the Civil Court had awarded him compensation, confirmed by the Constitutional Court last September.

Lawyer Tonio Azzopardi signed the judicial letter in which Mr Mifsud made his claim.
