Architect Lawrence Mintoff, 51, a former candidate and well-known Labour Party stalwart, died yesterday.

Mr Mintoff headed the PL's fourth district committee and contested the elections in 1992, 1996 and 1998. He served on the party executive and was involved in the design and building of the new party headquarters in Ħamrun.

Mr Mintoff was also president of the Chamber of Architects and was active in voluntary organisations.

He leaves to mourn his wife Michelle, née Saydon, his son Christopher and his daughter Stephanie.

The PL expressed its condolences and the party's councillors' section praised Mr Mintoff for the contribution he had made to the country both as a politician and a professional.

"His loss will be felt," the section's president, Claudette Abela Baldacchino, said.
