Lino Camilleri, the former Floriana FC president who led the Greens to various honours during his time as head of the club, died yesterday, aged 78.

Camilleri's first stint as president was in 1969 during a golden period for Floriana. He was elected to head the committee on 12 occasions and the last time he occupied the hot seat was in 1988.

With Camilleri at the helm, the Greens won various honours, among which two league championships, two FA Trophies, the Independence Cup twice and the Sons of Malta Cup three times.

Along with pre-World War Two president Francesco Schembri Zarb, Camilleri was the most successful man in charge of Floriana FC in the club's all-time history with 12 honours each.

"This was a sad news for us," club spokesman Dione Borg said.

"Camilleri was a respected person and his dedication and contribution to the club, particularly during his time as president, was recognised by one and all."

Camilleri was also involved in the running of the Malta FA and served as treasurer during a long career in football administration.

His funeral will be held on Monday at St Julian's parish church at 9.15 a.m.
