A stomach bug nearly cut short Simon Russell’s trip in aid of Inspire, but the young man managed to complete his 26-day cycle from Rotterdam on time. The 33-year-old set off on his 3,240 kilometre trip on May 3. He cycled through four countries, climbing more than three times the height of Mount Everest to raise funds for the Inspire Foundation Malta and Cancer Research UK.

He managed to arrive in Malta by ferry yesterday, as planned, where he was welcomed with cheers, hugs and champagne by Inspire officials, relatives and friends.

I contracted a stomach virus when I was close to Florence, and had to rest for two days

Visibly tired and sunburnt, he told this newspaper it was a long, challenging and sometimes lonely trip, but it was very rewarding.

The highlight was climbing the Alps and feasting his eyes on the beautiful scenery as he cycled through the different cities, including Naples and Florence.

“I contracted a stomach virus when I was close to Florence, and I had to rest for two days. I would have had to cancel the trip if I didn’t recover, but luckily I felt better and could continue,” he added.

The support he received through social media from his family and friends, and the will to finish the challenge were his main driving force throughout, and although he would consider embarking on a similar trip again, he would not travel on his own.
