The long wait for the results of the European Parliament elections started tonight when the polling stations closed at 10 p.m.
A record thirty-four candidates took part in the election of five MEPs, which will rise to six when Malta is allocated a sixth seat in the European Parliament in terms of the Lisbon Treaty. Most started their campaigning soon after the New Year, raising their tempo after Easter.
The voting process today was calm, except for an incident at Zejtun. Turnout was 34% up to 2 p.m., down four percent since the first EP election in Malta, held in 2004.
EP elections are also being held in the other 26 European Union countries. They started in the UK and The Netherlands on Thursday but most countries, including France and Germany, vote tomorrow, Sunday.
Results are due tomorrow afternoon.
