Ten European companies were shortlisted from 141 entries from 24 EU and candidate countries for the European Business Awards for the Environment, to be announced during Green Week at the Bibliothèque Solvay, Brussels, on June 2.

The awards, given by the commission every two years, single out European companies that have made an outstanding contributions to sustainable development in four categories - management, products, processes and international cooperation.

This year's record number of entries is the highest since the awards were launched in 1987.

Among the entries were two local companies which were awarded the Environment Award for Industry last year. These are General Soft Drinks Co Ltd. and Medichem Manufacturing (Malta) Ltd.

The international jury, chaired by the chief executive of the Fundación Entorno-BCSD España Cristina García-Orcoyen Tormo, was made up of 14 environmental experts. Godwin Micallef, representing Malta, was appointed to chair the management category.

The theme of this year's environment conference, also held during Green Week, is 'Biodiversity - our lifeline'.

The commission's work in Malta is handled by Cleaner Technology Centre.
