The government is waiting for the latest review of Malta's fiscal position by the European Commission which lead to the lifting of the excessive deficit procedure, the Prime Minister hinted this morning.

Addressing supporters at Zurrieq, Joseph Muscat extolled the government's fiscal direction, saying the deficit had been lowered despite subsequent income tax cuts.

Malta was placed under the EDP after the deficit target slipped in 2013. In its review last year the European Commission had given Malta two years to bring the deficit down to below three per cent in a sustained manner.

Dr Muscat said pensions were the government's next focus.

"We have to ensure pensioners are lifted out of poverty," he said, adding this was now possible after the government's economic direction led to growth and job creation.

Dr Muscat also reiterated his plea to Gozitan whistleblowers to come forward and lift the lid on "Pandora's Box of corruption" in their island.

He again made indirect reference to the case involving former Gozo minister Giovanna Debono's husband, who was allegedly involved in using public funds to pay for construction work in private residences.

Malta Today had reported that a whistleblower came forward, lifting the lid on the alleged scheme, which was now subject to a police investigation.

Dr Muscat urged people, even those who may have benefitted from corruption, to take legal advice and make use of the Whistleblower's Act.

"I urge anyone, especially Gozitans, to come forward," he said, adding the lid on Pandora's Box had started to lift. "That is from where the nasty smell of corruption was coming."

He said the law provided protection for those who came forward with proof of wrongdoing.

Dr Muscat touched on the closure of the Marsa power station, insisting this was the "biggest gift" to the people of the south.
