The European Commission has asked the general public to let it know how whistle-blower protection can be improved.

A public consultation exercise launched today is expected to help the Commission assess how and where protection for whistle-blowers can be strengthened, while respecting the principle of subsidiarity.

"This public consultation will be valuable for the Commission to make well-informed choices. This is an important issue and we have to get it right,” said Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová.

EU law already includes protection mechanisms for whistle-blowers in certain key areas, from audit and money laundering rules to trade secrets, market abuse, capital requirements and other instruments regulating financial services.

The public consultation seeks to collect views from a broad range of stakeholders, as well as the general public, on the issue of whistle-blower protection at national and EU level.

It will be open until May 29. Anyone interested in contributing can click here.
