The European Commission has approved a €51m Italy-Malta programme 2014-20, enabling Malta and Sicily to build on projects embarked upon during the 2007-2013 programming period.

The Secretariat for EU Funds explained how the programme grants funds for projects involving at least one Sicilian and one Maltese partner.

The projects have to focus on areas such as strengthening research, technological development and innovation, promoting competitiveness in the cross-border area, protecting the environment and fostering efficient use of resources.

Beneficiaries can include SMEs and micro enterprises, newly established enterprises, clusters/districts, universities, regional and national research institutions, public administrations, higher education schools (technical high schools), public and private research centres, scientific parks and category associations.  

During the 2007-2013 programming period, 52 Maltese beneficiaries including ministries, NGOs, entities and local councils took part in an aggregate of 25 projects, thus benefitting from an amount of approximately €10 million through their respective projects.
