The Medicines Authority last year made a profit of €92,048 as against €69,043 in 2008.

The authority's annual report and financial statements were laid on the Table of the House by the Prime Minister yesterday.

The functions of the authority, emanating from the Medicines Act, include assistance and advice to the Licensing Authority on matters relating to the regulation of medicinal products and related services.

Chief Executive Officer Patricia Vella Bonanno said that the authority had 35 members of staff (29 in 2008), including six in management, 20 technical people and nine in administration.
