The EU has refunded Malta the money owed for 2004-2006 EU-financed projects, which have all been successfully concluded, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this morning.

Addressing permanent secretaries and top civil servants, the Prime Minister said the European Commission had evaluated projects financed by European structural funds for the period and certified that Malta had delivered on more than 80 projects.

The country had also accounted for all money spent so it refunded Malta all the expenses owed.

Dr Gonzi was addressing the senior personnel at Castille to applaud them for their efforts.

The Prime Minister said that the post-membership budgetary period had been a difficult one as the country was still adjusting, and in the current budgetary period running up to 2013, 70 per cent of EU funds were already allocated for 130 projects. €1 billion is currently allocated to Malta.
