In the past couple of days, I have received e-mails and SMSs from friends and relatives overseas telling me how Alfred Sant's actions have made our country appear to be one of those Third World countries where democracy does not exist and human rights are trampled upon on a daily basis.

We are now hearing repeatedly the question on how can one interpret the non-voters and invalid votes as a no vote. I disagree with Dr Sant's theory that those who did not vote and those who invalidated their votes were no votes.

The Maltese and Gozitans are not shy or timid people by any standards. We are quite outspoken and ready to fight for our beliefs and opinions. It is for this reason that I cannot accept Dr Sant's theory.

All those who truly believed that joining the EU is not beneficial for Malta voted no. This is evidenced by the fact that 46.35 per cent of the votes reflected this. The remaining 53.65 per cent voted yes because they believe it is in Malta's interest to join the EU.

I believe that those who did not vote or invalidated their votes can fall into two categories. The first is that of the usual apathetic citizen. These are the same people who will not vote in general or local council elections. The second category consists of followers of the MLP who did not agree with Dr Sant's stand on this issue. These are followers who were not ready to vote no, but still reluctant to vote yes due to the politicising that occurred on this issue.

Dr Sant foresaw this and took advantage by declaring that people should either vote no, abstain or invalidate their votes - knowing full well that people would abstain or invalidate their votes for many reasons other than their belief against EU membership.

I cannot fathom how someone who is against EU membership would stay at home and remain silent. It is not in our character. We are too used to expressing our opinions to remain quiet during this crucial time.
