Traffic congestion is set to get worse before it gets better as several major EU-funded road and infrastructural projects share the same deadline next year.
Works are expected to start in the Żebbuġ area in the coming weeks and the disruption is expected to last about 12 weeks. There are six ongoing projects affecting areas across Malta and Gozo, most of which have to be completed by December 2015 so EU funds are not lost
The reconstruction of the coast road is the most expensive project although it does not affect as many zones as others.
The national flood relief project is another major scheme affecting Birkirkara, Msida, Ta’ Xbiex, Żabbar and Marsascala.
Another WSC project for the reconfiguration of the groundwater collection system will affect Luqa, Qrendi, Pembroke, Lapsi, Ċirkewwa, Qormi, Żebbuġ and Xewkija.
The WSC will also be working on pipelines to reduce water loss. The pipeline from Ta’ Bakkja to Ta’ Qali and the one from Ta’ Qali to Naxxar are the focus in Malta. In Gozo, there will be a pipeline from Ħondoq to Ta’ Ċenċ.
Baħrija and Rabat will face traffic congestion that is likely to last until the end of next year as the waste water collection network is being extended to connect Baħrija and the rural areas of Għajn Qajjet and Bieb ir-Ruwa to the main Rabat network.
It is not all bad news for motorists, however. Naxxar Road further up from Bathroom Design in Iklin has been reopened to traffic after major drainage works, and most work at Msida roundabout has also been completed.
