The EU this morning officially praised Malta’s efforts in coordinating the evacuation of EU citizens from Libya.

Speaking on behalf of the 27 member states during a debate on Libya at the European Parliament, Hungary’s Permanent Representative of the EU Peter Gyorkos said that though tiny, Malta is doing ‘a heroic performance’ and this is being recognised by all the member states.

With regards to burden sharing in case of an emergency influx of asylum seekers, Mr Gyorkos said that although there is no consensus on this among member states he is sure that Malta will get the necessary help in case this happens.
