Malta will acquire a third twin-engine helicopter and a helicopter-capable patrol vessel with EU funding after the European Commission ap-proved Malta’s Internal Security Fund (ISF) for 2014-2020.

Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Ian Borg announced yesterday that following negotiations, the document had been finalised and adopted by the European Commission, allowing Malta to invest around €75 million.

The ISF 2014-2020 will also provide for the installation of Phase II of the Integrated Communications System, the construction of a new Joint Operations Centre, the improvement of the reaction capability of patrol vessel P61 and a third fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft, as well as two new hangars and ancillary facilities at Air Wing.

Other interventions include the enhancement of the operational capabilities of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Platoon, the enhancement of the capacities of the Police Cyber Crime Unit and the Hazmat Section within the Civil Protection Department.
