In just three years almost 2,560 Maltese websites have chosen the .eu domain over the more conventional domains such as the .com, .org or even the national .mt domain for Malta.
According to new figures published in Brussels, by the end of last month, for every 100 people, Malta had 6.4 registered .eu domains.
In fact, it turns out to be more popular here than in other "older" European member states such as the UK, renowned for its euroscepticism. The Maltese are also bigger fans of the European domain than large member states such as France, Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal.
Cyprus comes in first place, with 66.1 European domains per thousand inhabitants followed by Luxembourg, The Netherlands and Ireland.
The EU Executive said there are now more than three million .eu internet domains and growth continued despite the financial crisis.
The number of .eu domains increased by two per cent during the first quarter of 2009, and .eu was firmly entrenched as the fifth most popular country code top-level domain worldwide.
However, the .com domain is still by far the most popular in the world with more than 79.4 million registrations.
