Maltese roots band Etnika is planning a big comeback this week after an eight-year absence on the local scene.
Titled Footnotes, its show features a more compact and back-to-basics set-up that will be staged on Friday and Saturday, showcasing a refreshed repertoire of the band’s best songs.
This time round, the band focused on expressing a more profound sentiment and worked on a fresh sound, free from effects and fanfare, while maintaining its original aim of the creative use of traditional and popular melodies and musical instruments.
The show promises a more contemporary and thoughtful approach, infusing the music with the energy and excitement which became a trademark of the band’s concerts. The ‘new’ Etnika is a reduced six-piece band with instruments such as the oud and biambo, fifra (Maltese cane flute) and flamenco footwork, double bass and Maltese lullabies. Patrons can anticipate a few detours and expect the unexpected.
The concerts will be held at Blue Box Theatre, Masquerade Theatre Arts School, Oscar Zammit Street, Msida, at 9pm. For tickets and information, call 2124 6644 and visit www.bluebox.com.mt or www.facebook.com/etnikamalta.
