The Employment and Training Corporation is stepping up efforts to curb irregular employment by recruiting inspectors to complement its Law Compliance Unit staff.

The inspectors will be monitoring cases where foreign nationals were issued with an employment licence by the ETC. This will be done to ensure the employer is abiding by the conditions of the licence.

Foreigners can only work in a particular occupation after they are issued with the licence. Similarly, employers must have an employment licence for any foreigner/s working for them.

The ETC said it was illegal for employers to assign additional tasks to foreign employees that were outside the remit of the licence issued. Any discrepancies would be reported to the police and appropriate legal action taken.
