Two employers were fined Lm500 each by the Courts of Justice after they were found guilty of employing foreigners without a work permit. One of the employers was fined an additional Lm100 for failing to inform the Employment and Training Corporation of the employment of four employees.

At the same sitting, three other employers were fined Lm50 each for employing workers without informing the ETC.

The ETC has stressed that all employers are legally bound to submit engagement forms of people they employ by not later than the first day of work. Self-employed people must also abide by this regulation.

The ER has urged the public to continue to report infringements about people presumed to be working irregularly. A 24-hour freephone service is available on 8007 6501 to report abuses. Reports can also be submitted through the ETC Website, www.etc.gov.mt.
