Three Estonians holidaying in Malta were this morning remanded in custody after they pleaded not guilty to seriously injuring and indecently assaulting a foreign girl who lives in Malta.

The Estonians Roman Ljasnikov, 30; Allan Schmidt, 32; and Aleksei Ivanov, 31; also pleaded not guilty to threatening the girl not to say anything.

Inspector Therese Sciberras told the court that one of the Estonians knew the young woman and asked her to show him and his friends around Malta.

On Monday evening, she went to the flat where they were staying, in Mosta Road, St Paul’s Bay, and found the men drunk.

When she refused sex, they locked her and beat her up and she is currently in hospital suffering from cigarette burns, bite marks and fractures.

She managed to get to the balcony where she screamed for help. Her screams alerted neighbours who called the police for assistance.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella remanded the men in custody.
