A lot has been written and said about the proposed new fares as from next July particularly about the higher fare for tourists. Some say they are discriminatory while others say they will keep tourists away. Apparently even the EU is having a look at them. Since the government will no longer subsidise the service, what will happen if the Maltese authorities were forced to apply the same fare structure to all commuters, irrespective of country of residence? Will local residents have to pay the higher fare as those proposed for tourists to make the service viable?
