The European Parliament's European People's Party expressed "grave concern at a number of recent political decisions taken by the Socialist Government in Malta".

It said these decisions are chipping away at the fundamental democratic structures of the country.

In a statement, EPP Group deputy chairman Manfred Weber referred to the replacement of the Police Commissioner, the head of the AFM, the double promotions given to four members of the army and the ruling given by the Speaker yesterday.

He said the Speaker ruled that the Opposition leader could not speak freely on allegations of political interference into police investigations following the change in Government.

"The EPP reiterates that freedom of expression is essential in a democracy and the national Parliament, as the highest institution of the land, should allow for such freedom to be exercised. To do otherwise is to undermine the foundations of a system of checks and balances in an EU member state and the erosion of the rule of law," Mr Weber said.
