A European Parliament report approved today could further ensure products such as bizzilla are protected from imitations made in other countries.
The report approved by MEPs proposes 22 targeted actions aimed at making the best possible use of the free market for consumers, SMEs, start-ups and professionals.
It also reiterates the importance of ‘Made In’ labels, which many MEPs believe should be compulsory for almost all non-food products across the single market.
The amendment was proposed by MEP Marlene Mizzi, who was the main report spokesperson for the S&D grouping. She hailed the parliamentary approval as a step forward for the protection of geographical indicators for non-food products.
Mrs Mizzi also challenged the European Commission to be more ambitious in its single market policies.
“I will not accept any trade-off of social rights or safety for consumers,” Mrs Mizzi said, as she reiterated her belief in the social model forming an integral part of the European single market.
Speaking immediately after the vote, Marlene Mizzi said: “More than ever, we need to turn the focus back to the people. The single market needs real solutions and practical measures to guarantee equal treatment and social inclusion, creation of sustainable jobs and growth and high level of consumer protection."
Another report on which Mrs Mizzi was the main S&D spokesperson, which concerned the monitoring of the application of EU law, was also approved by the European Parliament’s PETI Committee.
