Environmentalists this morning called for the resignation of the planning authority chairman and board following the damning report on the Mistra project issued by the Ombudsman yesterday.

Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar coordinator Astrid Vella, who was also speaking on behalf of Birdlife, Din l-Art Helwa, Friends of the Earth, Gaia Foundation, Greenhouse, Moviment Graffiti, Malta Organic Agricultural Movement, Nature Trust, Ramblers and Y4TE, said that the report left no other option for the Mepa board than to resign as the Ombudsman stated clearly that the outline permit for the mega development project in Xemxija should have been revoked.

The Ombudsman’s report also clearly stated that the chairman broke the law with regards to the postponement of the decision and so he should now shoulder responsibility, Ms Vella said.

FoE's honorary chairperson Edward Mallia said that the Ombudsman report clearly stated that the Mistra development was the same as the outline permit issued for Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s disco in Mistra, which was revoked.

“The same should have applied to this mega project on the Xemxija ridge,” Prof. Mallia said.

Ms Vella said that the pro-environment protest which was cancelled last Saturday due to bad weather will now be held on Saturday at 10.30am starting from City Gate in Valletta.
