The draw by lot for entry into Church schools for the next scholastic year started yesterday and will go on until tomorrow when 1,063 of the 3,214 applications will have been picked, the Curia said.

The 269 kindergarten students were selected yesterday while the draws for the 330 pre-grade students will be held today. The 464 Year One students will be picked tomorrow.

Draws are being held at the Archbishop's Curia offices in Floriana at 3 p.m.

The Curia said that 1,016 children, born in 2005, applied to attend kindergarten. Of the 269 chosen, 59 were special cases (from the 86 that applied for the special slots), 96 siblings, and 114 were drawn by lot.

1,101 children born in 2004, applied for pre-grade school where there are 330 slots available.

Eighty-six will be special cases (chosen from the 126 who applied), 119 siblings and 125 (22 boys and 103 girls) will be drawn.

Of the 464 2003-born students who will be selected for Year One, for which there were 1,097 applications, there will be 87 special cases (of 196 who applied), 167 siblings, two from Church-run homes, and 208 (71 boys and boys and 137 girls) by lot.

This means that 2,151 applicants will have to be turned down.
