The parents of five-year-old Naomi Incorvaja returned from Great Ormond Street Hospital last night, disappointed after being told there was no cure for their daughter.

Dennis and Sandra had left Malta with their daughter two weeks ago, hopeful that British specialists would determine what Naomi has and cure their only child.

But their hopes were dashed after specialists diagnosed Naomi with an incurable condition which involves the progressive degeneration of the white matter of the brain.

"We have been told there is no cure for Naomi and the hospital sent us back to Malta because it seems there is nothing else we can do," Sandra said.

"We have to accept the cards God has dealt us and be strong for our little girl.

"We just have to accept the reality. Naomi is a fighter and looking at her gives me courage.

"We have been told there is no need to hospitalise her. She will undergo extensive therapy but as long as she is stable she can continue leading as normal a life as possible," she said.

The only thing Naomi eats is a milkshake which is pumped with nutrients and vitamins. Four boxes, which will last just one month, cost around Lm95.

The costs of caring for Naomi can be quite high and her father, a painter by profession, had just left his job to start his own business when Naomi's condition took a turn for the worse. He has had to give up work temporarily to be by his daughter's side.

In an attempt to make the parents' lives somewhat easier, two young mothers have come forward with the idea of organising Naomi's Show - an afternoon of entertainment by children for children.

Isabel Debattista and her sister-in-law Colette Debattista have roped in Belinda Aquilina, the chief animator at the Corinthia Jerma Palace Hotel, Marsascala, to organise this fund-raising event.

Naomi's show is being held at the hotel on Sunday from 2 p.m. onwards. Children and their families will be asked to donate Lm1 each as an entrance donation. The money will go to Naomi's parents.

The entertainment will include Belinda and the Corinthia Jerma Animation Team, The Young Talent Team, the Little Talent Team, Annabelle, Christabelle, Marilena, Cherton, Alana and many performers.

"We believe in miracles and I plan to take Naomi to Lourdes - you never know, God may give her another chance," Sandra said.

Those wishing to help the family may send a donation to Bank of Valletta account: 40012122457.
