It may feel like only yesterday that the tournament started but the reality is we are about to enter the stage when the tournament turns serious.

Last night’s comprehensive and comfortable wins for Spain and Sweden respectively signaled the end of the first round of matches and tonight there is a very real chance we could see at least one team effectively eliminated.

If either Turkey or Switzerland lose they are as good as out barring a mathematical miracle. If they draw they are still in with a shout but not one you would be able to hear very far away.

In the other game the Czech Republic and Portugal both know a win in their match will guarantee them qualification and with it the supreme comfort of knowing they can play their reserves in the last group game.

Traditionally these middle-of-the-group-stage games are cagey affairs with so much riding on the outcome. Teams with one defeat in the bag already will be desperate not to concede the goal that could send them packing. Teams sitting on a win will hold back knowing a draw could be enough to see them through.

My predictions? Wins for Switzerland and Portugal. So you may want to go and put some money on their opponents…

Now, about last night’s games.

My adopted team Spain certainly lived up to their pre-tournament hype in the four, one demolition of Russia. Just as we thought they are the real deal in midfield and attack although their shaky defence could become a major worry as the tournament progresses.

This isn’t the first time the Spaniards have got off to a flying start in a tournament like this only to fade badly come the later stages. However, me and my €20 stick by them to go all the way.

Sweden, on the other hand didn’t need to break into too much of a sweat to beat a Greece side who look determined to prove their win in the last European Championship was an utter fluke.

Swedish talisman Henrik Larsson was, once again, Sweden’s best player as he showed age is no barrier when you are blessed with natural talent. He didn’t score but he set one up and oozed confidence and class throughout.

The question is, how long will Sweden be able to keep persuading Larsson to come out of retirement to save their skins at a major tournament? This is the third time he has done just that and it may start to get a little silly if they are still dusting him down and wheeling him out come the next tournament.

Finally, on a slightly separate note, if you want to post comments about this blog please feel free to do so using the rather cute, speech-bubble icon thing conveniently located at the top and bottom of the page. If you do that rather than send me e-mails it would be greatly appreciated.
