The first ever English Language Teaching in Malta conference is being held today and tomorrow at the Old University in Valletta.

The conference was organised by English as a Foreign Language Monitoring board. Chairman Daniel Xerri hoped the conference would become a yearly event which would put Malta on the ELT international calendar.

Introducing the conference, Education Minister Dolores Cristina said that bilingualism was a co-part of Malta’s national curricula and the country was proud of its linguistic heritage.

“We are proud that Maltese is an EU language but we are also proud that we speak English, which is a truly global language.”

She said the country had to focus on constantly improving standards because this gave it a competitive advantage in the international world.

Tourism Minister Mario de Marco said the Malta Tourism Authority used the EFL as an intrinsic part of the tourism industry, the area was an important niche market for tourism.

He thanked Feltom for increasingly attracting tourists from far flung countries.
