It had to happen after last year England was represented by three teams in the last four of the Champions League. Now, the four that started the competition have all progressed to the quarter-finals.

It is the first time a country has four teams in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with the first legs scheduled for next week.

Liverpool were the last English club to secure a berth in the quarter-finals after seeing off Inter.

Manager Rafael Benitez hailed the quality of the Premier League after the Reds tamed the Italians home and away for a 3-0 aggregate win.

Of the eight sides reaching the quarter-finals, the other two to make a double on their opponents in the first knockout stage were Barcelona (against Celtic) and Roma (against Real Madrid).

Liverpool joined Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in the last eight.

Before, there had been nine occasions when three clubs from one country reached the last eight, as follows:

England (2000-01 and 2006-07), Germany (1997-98), Italy (2004-05 and 2005-06) and Spain (1999-2000, 2000-01, 20001-02 and 2002-03).

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher remarked that Liverpool have proved they can win the Champions League again. Against Inter away, Carragher was making his 100th appearance in Europe.

A direct clash between Premier League sides was on the cards with four teams in the hat for the quarter-finals draw.

That fate befell Liverpool, once more, who drew the short straw. This time, they will meet Arsenal.

Since the start of the UEFA competitions in the 1950s, English sides have faced each other on 13 occasions, five of which occurred in the last five years.

This will be the fourth time since 2004 that Liverpool have been involved and the seventh time since 1963-64. They are followed by Chelsea on five.

The skirmishes in the Champions League have resulted as follows:

2003-04 (quarter-final): Chelsea-Arsenal 1-1, 2-1 (3-2).
2004-05 (semi-final): Chelsea-Liverpool 0-0, 0-1 (0-1).
2005-06 (group match): Liverpool-Chelsea 0-0, 0-0 (two points each).
2006-07 (semi-final): Chelsea-Liverpool 1-0, 0-1 (1-1 - after extra time). Liverpool win 4-1 on penalties.

Between April 2 and 8, Liverpool and Arsenal will play each other three times. The first leg of the Champions League QF at the Emirates Stadium on April 2 will be followed by their second round Premier League clash on April 5 and three days later, the two Premier League giants go head to head again in the return leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

After knocking out holders Milan, Arsene Wenger's team will be locking horns with Liverpool, last year's beaten finalists in the Champions League. Arsenal became the first English side to win away at Milan.

Liverpool have won their last five Champions League matches, three of which at home.

The last time Liverpool failed to win in this competition was on October 24, 2007 at Besiktas (2-1). The netting against Inter at the San Siro sent the Reds over the 500-goal mark in all competitions (501).

The Gunners have only lost once in eight outings in the tournament this season, away to Sevilla. That upset saw them qualify as group runners-up.

Back in Rome

Manchester United have the confidence to repeat what they successfully did last year and oust Roma from the competition. Actually, this will be the third time the two sides will cross each other's shadows in the competition.

Last season, United went down 2-1 (Rooney) in their first leg quarter-final game which was marred by crowd disorder. Yet, the way they bounced back in the second leg was exhilarating, to say the least, as they trounced their opponents 7-1 (Carrick 2, Smith, Rooney, Ronaldo 2, Evra) at Old Trafford.

In the group phase encounters this season, the Red Devils won 1-0 (Rooney) at home and shared the spoils away in a 1-1 (Pique) draw to earn four points and top their group undefeated. Rooney has scored in three of United's four matches against the Serie A high-fliers.

United manager Alex Ferguson voiced his concern about the trip to Italy. "Away from the football, obviously, my biggest concern is the fans," he told the club's website.

"During the game in Rome this season the security was much improved. But there will be more fans travelling with us for this match. That said, I have a feeling it will be another great European tie."

Roma are Italy's remaining team this year after Arsenal knocked out seven-time winners Milan and Inter were eliminated by Liverpool.

After last year's debacle at Old Trafford, Roma are buoyed by solid performances against Man. United earlier in the competition and got more wind in their sails following the remarkable double over nine-time and record title winners Real Madrid in the last 16.

Following their home win over Lyon, United, who are appearing in their 31st campaign in the continent, played a total of 250 games in the three competitions.

United stats: won 133, drawn 66, lost 51, goals for 470, goals against 247.

Best rearguard

Chelsea, who play Fenerbahce in the quarter-finals, boast the best defence so far in the competition, having conceded a mere two goals in eight outings and are also undefeated. They join Barcelona and Manchester United as the only unbeaten sides in the 2007-08 Champions League.

The Londoners' last defeat in the Champions League dates back to May 1, 2007, when they lost 1-0 at Liverpool.

Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in each of their last six Champions League matches.

The Blues have met Turkish opposition twice before:

1999-2000 (Champions League group match): Galatasaray - Home 1-0, Away 5-0 (six points).

2003-2004 (Champions League group match: Besiktas - Home 0-2, Away 2-0 (three points).

Rangers roar on

Rangers are the only British side left in the UEFA Cup after they saw off German side Werder Bremen in the fourth round - 2-0 (Cousin, Davis), at home, and 0-1 away.

The Glasgow side now face Sporting Lisbon, of Portugal, starting with the first leg at Ibrox. The side from the Portuguese capital ousted Bolton 2-1 on aggregate in the previous round.

The only other occasion that Rangers met Sporting before was in the second round of the Cup Winners' Cup in 1971-72.

The 'Gers moved past Sporting on the away goals rule (home 3-2; away 3-4) and went on to lift the trophy, defeating Dynamo Moscow, of Russia, 3-2 in the final in Barcelona.
