England open their Euro 2012 campaign against France in Donetsk on Monday at 6 p.m. knowing they have to overcome a number of familiar faces.

Despite being the seeded nation in Group D, England’s task has not been helped by Roy Hodgson being given just six weeks to prepare as Fabio Capello’s successor and many believe a draw would represent an excellent result.

Here, are some of the key battles that could decide England’s fate.

John Terry vs Karim Benzema

So much has been said about Terry in the build-up, now he needs to deliver. Benzema has blossomed into one of Europe’s deadliest strikers at Real Madrid and England must shut him down.

Scott Parker vs Samir Nasri

Parker is England’s best midfield anchor man since Owen Hargreaves and needs to ensure space is at a premium for France’s playmakers. Nasri had an inconsistent debut campaign at Manchester City but can be devastating on his day.

Danny Welbeck vs Philippe Mexes

Mexes is viewed as the weak link in France’s defence, so it is a shame Wayne Rooney is suspended. It is anticipated Manchester United club-mate Danny Welbeck will step in, so his first competitive start could be a memorable one.
