Prof. Robert Ghirlando, dean of the University's Faculty of Engineering, has been appointed by the European Commission as a member of the European Business Award for the Environment (EBAE) jury following his nomination by the University's Cleaner Technology Centre.

The jury will be meeting in Slovenia, which currently holds the EU presidency, to choose the winners of the EBAE, which will be awarded during the Green Week to be held in June in Brussels.

At a ceremony held last Friday at the Foundation for International Studies' Aula Magna presided over by Environment Minister George Pullicino, the local Environment Award for Industry was presented to a number of Maltese firms that will now go on to participate in the EBAE. Hilton Malta won the Management Award for Sustainable Development category, and IMA Engineering Services Ltd received the Environment Protection Initiative Award for SMEs. The Conservation Award for Sustainable Development category was awarded to both The Edible Oil Refining Company Ltd and Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum, while Yellow Pages (Malta) Ltd received an honorable mention for this award category.
