Talks between Enemalta and Shanghai Electric have been concluded and the deal will be signed in the coming days, the government announced today.

The Chinese company will acquire a 33 per cent shareholding in Enemalta and take over the BWSC plant, which it will convert to operate on gas.

Enemalta and Shanghai Electric Power will also form joint ventures to sell alternative energy equipment to the European market and to provide maintenance service for Shanghai Electric Power plants in the Mediterranean region.

The government said the investment by Shanghai Electric, the biggest in Malta, will see Enemalta placed on a sound footing, enabling it to be a contributor to the Maltese economy.

It said the agreement will be published and discussed in Parliament.
