Enemalta insisted once more today that the building of the chimneys as part of the extension of the power station at Delimara is not illegal.

Marsaxlokk local council yesterday filed a judicial protest against the corporation, claiming that the 65-metre chimneys are illegal because they are not covered by a Mepa permit. It insisted that during the granting of the permit for the extension, and in the subsequent appeal, it was made clear that the height of the chimneys was a Mepa 'reserved matter'.

However Enemalta reiterated today that  the Delimara Power Station extension is being developed following the Full Development Permit that MEPA has granted to Enemalta in 2010.

"The granted Full Development Permit is a permit which allows for the construction of the plant. The IPPC permit (which still has to be issued) is the permit which allows plant operation and not the one determining the presence or not of the chimney," the corporation said.
