The Labour Party and the people were not impressed with the money being squandered on deceitful adverts by Enemalta on the expected drop in emissions once the new Delimara power station starts working, Labour environment spokesman Leo Brincat said today.

Mr Brincat said in a statement that while the PL welcomed the fact that some environmental emissions such as dust would drop the people had to be reminded that the government had opted for the most polluting technology when it came to decide on the new power station extension.

Mr Brincat said it had not yet been explained clearly enough if, with the BWSC technology, Enemalta would be in an economically viable positive to cover its operations and obligations on carbon dioxide emissions, which caused climate change.

A drop in carbon dioxide emissions was desirable and important but this had to be done in line with the EU’s new legislation.

The same could be said for the sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emission, which were capped for Malta under the National Emissions Ceilings Directive.

It was expected that any revision to this directive would lower such capping.

Malta, Mr Brincat said, was currently in a situation where electricity generation was in a very bad state.

Had the government acted wisely and invested in gas in the past years rather than commit itself abusively to a power station extension which operated on heavy fuel oil, the emissions currently being boasted about would have been much lower.
