It is a well-known fact that there is a severe lack of students in Malta who take up the study of science subjects. This is hampering industry that relies more and more on graduates with a scientific background. The general misconception is that science subjects are difficult and boring. Nothing could be further from the truth. In my opinion, the best way of introducing students to science subjects is not through books - these come later - but through direct participation.

This year being the International Year for Astronomy, commemorating the 400th anniversary since Galileo's sky observations through a telescope and the 40th anniversary since man first landed on the moon, students should be encouraged more than ever to participate in astronomy activities. Astronomy does not consist in just star gazing and identifying the constellations but as an introduction to the basic science subjects of physics, chemistry, biology and geology among others.

Malta has the ideal climate for astronomical observations. This was noted since the time of Grandmaster De Rohan who built the first observatory in Valletta. In the 19th century, William Lassell set up in Malta the then largest telescope in existence. Alas, Malta today lacks an observatory and the study of astronomy is mainly confined to the enthusiasm of amateur astronomers.

As a long-term investment, the government should encourage an appropriate NGO to set up such an observatory by first providing a site, then by contributing financially and thirdly by encouraging students to participate in activities, which are organised by such NGOs. Only if a wholehearted effort is made will the trend be reversed and more students be more than willing to take up science subjects. But perhaps this is just a dream for politicians are short-sighted... or am I wrong?
