Malta needed to do more to encourage women to contribute to various sectors of society although results had been achieved, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this morning.

Speaking during a dialogue meeting at the party’s Sta Venera club, Dr Gonzi said that Eurostat figures show that while between 2005-2009, the increase in women participation at EU level, averaged at two per cent, the average in Malta was 4.2 per cent.

The government had introduced various tax incentives to encourage women return to work and 3,200 had benefitted from these measures.

The secret of success, the Prime Minister said, was a mosaic of factors which included the flexibility and capability of workers, fluency in English and investment in education.

Malta’s success was also due to EU membership, membership in the euro zone and the various reforms being carried out.

Education Minister Dolores Cristina also spoke about the importance of family friendly measure in both the public and private sectors to entice more women to join the workforce.

The Prime Minister said that the country’s ambitions for the next two years involved were for more investment in tourism, infrastructure, and the environment.
