En Garde Fencing Club has completed a very successful 2002/03 season, winning medals in most local competitions and scoring a good result in the Junior World Championships in Trapani last April.

The surprise this season was Marie-Jo Scicluna, 14. She won the Foil championship, becoming the youngest female national champion to date.

Her excellent result on the local scene won her a place in the contingent that represented Malta in the Junior World Championships.

Scicluna proved her worth and scored a victory in the preliminary competition over a Dominican Republic opponent.

Jacob Sammut, 17, was joint third in the Foil National Championships and last Saturday obtained bronze in the Foil Malta Open.

Sammut was selected for the junior championships together with Pierre Bianchi from St Paul Fencing Club.

En Garde Fencing Club has been working on its nursery for the past five years, and the results are already beginning to show. Four instructors at the club have been to Italy on special courses and recently obtained a diploma from the Naples Academy of Fencing.

Anyone interested in fencing should contact club coach Daniel Sammut on tel. 21-639188 or 9940-7388.
