Non-fatal accidents at work have gone down by about six per cent – 44 – in the first three months of this year when compared to the same quarter in 2014.
One fatal accident at work was reported in the first quarter.
Figures released by the National Office of Statistics show that the majority of the 670 accidents occurred in the manufacturing sector followed by construction and transportation and storage. There was an increase in accidents in the health and social work sectors.
Most accidents – 422 – resulted in wounds and superficial injuries while dislocations, strains and sprains were reported in 134 cases.
Nearly half the injuries sustained at work affected the upper extremities of the body, such as fingers and hands.
Nearly a third of the accidents took place in enterprises employing 500 or more employees.
