Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, held an awards night for top supporting cargo agents and shippers for the financial year 2005/2006. The evening, which was hosted by Emirates manager for Malta and Cyprus, Paul Fleri Soler, was held at Villa Corinthia, Corinthia Palace Hotel, Attard.

Emirates vice president commercial cargo operations Peter Sedgley, who flew over to Malta for the occasion, presented the Emirates Cargo Awards to the three top cargo agents for Malta. These were MAL Services Limited, B.A.S. Limited and Eyre Cargo Services.

Mr Sedgley also presented awards to STMicroelectronics (Malta) Ltd, Melita Tuna Ltd. and De La Rue Currency and Security who received recognition as the top shippers for Malta.

"Thanks to the personal and efficient service of all our cargo agents and shippers, Malta's cargo service has boosted the business and trade links with Dubai, the commercial hub of the Middle East. The new Malta service via Larnaca in Cyprus, together with the increase in frequency to four flights each week, have enhanced the flexibility of our network and is providing Maltese and Cypriot customers with convenient access to new markets in the Middle East, Indian subcontinent, Asia-Pacific and Africa," Mr Sedgley said.

Since October 2005 Emirates is flying from Dubai to Malta via Larnaca every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday on A330-200 planes, with a freight capacity of 13 tonnes each way. This new route has opened another gateway in the Mediterranean. It is providing faster delivery for Maltese importers of perishables and other time-sensitive cargo.

Paul Fleri Soler said: "We congratulate the award winners and we would like to extend our appreciation to all Maltese cargo agents. You are all valued partners and thanks to your support, Emirates SkyCargo has established a good reputation in Malta as one of the leading airfreight airlines in industry. We are confident that together with our cargo agents and shippers we shall continue to set standards and offer our customers comprehensive cargo solutions.

"Through SkyChain, our online cargo logistics system, we're changing the way the cargo business works, empowering our customers with the tools they need to better control their consignments. SkyChain enables customers to obtain information as well as transact business online," continued Mr Fleri Soler.

Emirates SkyCargo, which is represented in Malta by the General Sales Agent, Cassar Cooper Limited has expanded its weekly existing belly-hold capacity to 52 tonnes in each direction between Malta, Cyprus and Dubai. Emirates SkyCargo's rapidly expanding network now serves 83 destinations in 57 countries in Europe, North America, Middle East, Africa, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East.
