For the fourth consecutive year, Emirates Airline will be sponsoring the Malta Golf Association (MGA) Shield. The competition, one of the highlights of the Royal Malta Golf Club’s (RMGC) calendar of events, will take place next month.

The MGA Shield is open to RMGC members holding a valid golf handicap. The tournament will be based on a two-day aggregate medal stroke-play.

The women’s tournament will be held on October 7 and the men’s event will take place on October 9.

The final day of the Shield will be played on October 10.

William Beck, MGA president, said: “The MGA Shield is becoming part of the story and tradition of golf in Malta. On behalf of the MGA Executive Council I thank the RMGC chairman, captain, club committees, our sponsors, in particular Emirates, and all those who give a helping hand to ensure a successful competition.”

The players (men and women) with the overall best net aggregate score will each receive a return ticket for two to Cyprus on Emirates Airline and a trophy. An additional nine consolation prizes will be awarded.

Paul Fleri Soler, Emirates manager for Malta and Cyprus, said: “Our sponsorship of the MGA Shield is a great source of satisfaction for us, at Emirates, and represents another successful stage in which our commitment will contribute to the promotion and development of golf in Malta.”

As a leading supporter of golf tournaments across the globe, Emirates is the official airline of 13 events, including the Ryder Cup.

Eight of the 12 other tournaments it sponsors are on the 2010 European Tour international schedule, including the Dubai Desert Classic, the Avantha Masters (India), Malaysian Open, Austrian Open, BMW International Open (Germany), WGC – HSBC Champions (China), Barclays Singapore Open and the UBS Hong Kong Open.
