The Church’s Emigrants’ Commission has praised and thanked the AFM and the public authorities for their coordinated action to save the life of 162 migrants rescued from rough seas this week.

The commission said it felt it should thank all involved for averting a huge tragedy near Malta.

The rescue mission was in keeping with what was said in the Acts of the Apostles following St Paul’s Shipwreck in Malta, that: “After we had escaped, we then learned that the island was called Malta,” the commission said.

The Commission also praised the Captain and crew of the tanker Overseas Primar for having picked up and cared for the migrants for four days until they could be landed in Malta.

The migrants were picked up from a 10-metre boat 59 miles south of Malta last Sunday but the rough weather meant they could not be landed in Malta before yesterday.
