Carmel J. Delia is, of course, quite right in saying Elvis Presley enjoyed an illustrious and, perhaps, unequalled musical career. (The King Is Dead, Long "Lives" The King, June 6). To fans the world over Elvis was and still is, recognised as the king of rock 'n' roll.

And yet, relatively few people may be aware that Elvis was a believer. He loved gospel music and on occasion before a performance could be found alone backstage on his knees in prayer.

What's more, he didn't cherish being called The King. In the documentary/music video He Touched Me - The Gospel Music Of Elvis Presley, Tony Brown, president of MCA Records, recalls that, during one Elvis Presley concert a group of young women sitting in a row front and centre suddenly stood up holding a huge sign that said: "Elvis, you're The King".

To their surprise, Elvis Presley rebuked them, saying: "No, Jesus Christ is King".
