There must be several Maltese families who can apply for "The Elizabeth Cross" a new award announced by the Ministry of Defence on July 1. It is being granted to the next of kin of the men who served in the British forces who were killed in operations or died as a result of an act of terrorism since January 1, 1948. This includes personnel in Palestine between September 1945 and end of 1947. Where the next of kin has deceased their legal successor can apply.

It is the first time that the name of a reigning monarch has been given to a new award since the George Cross was established in 1940 by King George V1 for acts of bravery by both civilian and military.

The Elizabeth Cross is made of silver and is in the form of a cross over a wreath, passing between the arms, and bears the floral emblems of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

The reverse of the cross bears the crowned cypher of the Queen which will also have the engraved name of the deceased. Each family eligible will be given one Elizabeth Cross which can be worn on any occasion with an additional pin-on miniature version. Both will be presented in a black leather box with the royal cypher on the lid and the royal coat of arms on the inner silk lining.

The Elizabeth Cross will also be presented with a memorial scroll signed by the Queen which will bear the name of the person who died.

For those families who believe they are entitled to The Elizabeth Cross, they should contact: MOD Medal Office, Building 250, Imjin Barracks, Innsworth, Gloucester, GL3 1 HW, England or telephone for further information on (0044) 141 224 3600 .
