People who receive a fine will be notified within 12 hours via e-mail or text message through a new government service.

The notification will be made available from July 15 from the newly revamped website www.les.gov.mt, which so far allowed people to pay tickets online or file a petition contesting the contravention.

However, Justice Minister Owen Bonnici said the new site would offer a faster and more efficient service to the public, especially to companies that used a number of cars.

Not only can people choose to be notified about their contravention online but they can also receive reminders about pending fines, upcoming tribunal sittings and when the decision is due to be given.

Those who register for the service, which is free, will also receive their summons for a tribunal hearing through an e-mail. Their names will not be included in the weekly list of pending fines published in a local newspaper.

People who still prefer to receive the fines in the mail could still do so.
