A new distribution centre will be built at Mrieħel to continue consolidating its electricity distribution network supplying customers in Birkirkara, Santa Venera, Mrieħel and nearby localities, Enemalta said this morning.

It is the fifth new distribution centre that Enemalta will be commissioning by the end of 2017.

The new installations, a three-year multi-million investment to improve network resilience, secure the necessary additional capacity to meet the country's rising electricity demand and introduce new technologies to increase the efficiency of the national electricity distribution infrastructure.

The project aims to improve quality of service to all customers in Malta and Gozo by reducing electricity supply disruptions and acquiring the necessary flexibility to provide a quicker response to natural faults, accidental or storm damages and other network disturbances.

The existing Santa Venera Distribution Centre, which currently distributes electricity to the Mrieħel, Santa Venera and Qormi areas, is also being upgraded with new equipment as part of the Network Reinforcement Project.

Major upgrades to the Mellieħa Distribution Centre are also underway. Several other works, including new high voltage network connections and the installation of new automation equipment, are in progress as well.
