The decision to turn Two Gates Street in Senglea into a one-way street has raised concerns, as those who regularly use the road are claiming that a number of near misses have already taken place.

The street is popular with motorists driving to Gardjola Gardens but is also used by electronic vehicles supplied by Rolling Geeks, which provides guided tours to tourists who rent the battery-operated vehicles to drive around Senglea, guided by software highlighting sites of interest.

To change the route, the software would have to be completely reworked, something which, according to company spokeswoman Dawn Cutajar was not an option, as it was too expensive.

Instead, the battery-operated vehicles have been given permission by the local council to go in both directions, with the residents complaining that it would soon lead to an accident.

Ms Cutajar said the company was of the same opinion as the residents and had brought up the matter with council.

“The whole one-way issue is very confusing for everyone. Our clients drive themselves and I have been forced to instruct them to be very careful, but that’s not the way to go about things,” she said.

Both the company and the residents said the council had not yet come up with any solutions. Senglea mayor Joseph Casha said he was aware of the issue but there was not much that could be done, since the request to Transport Malta to make the change was done by the previous council.

“It’s understandable that the company cannot change its software but at the same time, the residents have every right to be concerned. The problem is that there’s not much the council can do at this point.”

Mr Casha said that since the change had been approved by Transport Malta, requesting any further changes now would be very difficult. He said the council would be discussing the issue in the coming days.
