Elderly Gozitans now have 40 beds available as part of the government's residential care scheme, after the government extended a public private partnership agreement it had introduced last year.

In a statement issued today, the Active Ageing parliamentary secretariat said it had struck a deal to "increase the availability of residential care beds for elderly Gozitans". The deal, it said builds on the service introduced last year by the secretariat.

Elderly Rights parliamentary secretary Justyne Caruana announced the deal earlier today during a visit she paid to Villa San Lawrenz in Gozo.

The government had bought 10 of Villa San Lawrenz's beds in January 2015 to give to elderly Gozitans. It is believed this latest deal builds on this one, although the secretariat's statement was vague and thin on detail.

The extra beds are expected to ease some of the pressure on Gozo's strained elderly care facilities, which are battling to keep up with an ageing population.

Elderly people interested in applying for residential care can call 2590 3175 for more information. Applicants will be assessed by a multidisciplinary team.
