The speed camera in Triq in-Nutar Żarb, Attard caught the biggest number of speeding vehicles last year, according to the National Statistics Office.

In a publication on Transport Statistics, the NSO said speed camera contraventions totalled 15,242, of which 12,961, or 85 per cent were in the ‘15km/h over speed limit’ group.

It said that last year, 64,697 traffic-related contraventions were issued by the police, 138,70 by wardens. The biggest number 26.2 per cent (police) and 36.9 per cent (wardens) were for ‘illegal/unauthorised parking’.

The number of reported traffic accidents reached 14,070, 476 less than in the previous year.

Twelve drivers, one passenger and five pedestrians died as a result.

Nine fatalities caused by passenger cars, six by motorcycles and the rest by buses and goods-carrying vehicles.

The statistics also deal with passenger traffic.

Passenger traffic at the Malta International Airport increased by 388,001 (10.6 per cent) last year compared to 2012.

An increase of 8.4 per cent was recorded between January and March, 9.5 per cent between April and June, 8.8 per cent between July and September and 16.9 per cent between October and December.

The key destinations remained the UK followed by Italy.

Air Malta remained the major air carrier, accounting for 42.3 per cent of total aircraft movements and 43.5 per cent of total passenger movements. It was followed by Ryanair.

On sea transport, the statistics show that 15 of the yachts arriving in Malta in 2013 were registered in the Cayman Islands.

The total number of vessels registered in Malta was 6,248, including 2,930 yachts, 770 fishing vessels, 1,399 dry cargo vessels and 616 liquid bulk vessels.

During the year under review, the number of cruise liner calls totalled 286, a decrease of 36 over 2012.

Transit passengers amounted to 380,277, a decrease of 26.4 per cent.
